Secular Organizations for Sobriety, Rochester NY

Opening Statement

Hello, it's time to begin.  Welcome to SOS.  My name is ___, and I will lead tonight's meeting.  Secular Organizations for Sobriety, or Save Our Selves, is dedicated to providing a path to sobriety and is an alternative to those groups that emphasize or depend upon supernatural or religious beliefs.  We respect diversity, welcome healthy skepticism, and encourage rational thinking as well as the expression of feelings.  We each take responsibility for our individual sobriety on a daily basis.

This is a sobriety meeting.  Our focus is on the priority of abstaining from alcohol and other mind-altering drugs.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Free literature and refreshments are available;  there is no smoking in the building;  contributions are welcomed but not required.

ANNIVERSARIES: Does anyone have a sobriety anniversary they wish to have us celebrate?

We consider sobriety to be a separate issue from religion or spirituality.  We choose to use the following guidelines to achieve our goal of abstinence from our drug of choice.

SIX GUIDELINES:

  1. To break the cycle of denial and achieve sobriety, we first acknowledge that we are alcoholics or addicts.

  2. We re-affirm this truth daily and accept without reservations the fact that as clean and sober individuals we cannot and do not drink or use, no matter what.

  3. Since drinking or using is not an option for us, we take whatever steps necessary to continue our Sobriety Priority lifelong.

  4. A high quality of life, "the good life", can be achieved.  However, life is also filled with uncertainties.  Therefore, we do not drink or use regardless of feelings, circumstances or conflicts.

  5. We share in confidence with each other our thoughts and feelings as sober, clean individuals.

  6. Sobriety is our Priority and we are each responsible for our lives and our sobriety.
We will now go around the room and introduce ourselves.  Please use your first name only.  When you introduce yourself, you may wish to mention some recent crisis or event in your life, or you may simply pass.  Please be brief at this point.  We will get back to you, if you wish, after we have heard from everyone.  We feel that the observations from the group might be of value to you, but if you don't want comments, please tell us so.

Again, my name is ____ and the person to my left/right is ____?
